Jean Guyon makes a Box…

Posted on | June 23, 2005

One of the events at Vinexpo, was the presentation by Jean Guyon, owner of Château Rollan de By, in the Mèdoc, of his range of Bag-in-Box, humorously entitled ‘Bacchus Box®’ (one wonders why no one thought of it before…) 7 products, very fancy, designed by a German fashion house Escada (it was sufficient to observe the stares of the majority of women passing their stand to see that it was a really good idea).

And the novelty, apart from the bright and joyful packaging, tell me…? Oh well, it is that the most expensive box will sell in the shops for around Euros150 (for 3 litres). And yes, Jean Guyon has dared, to put in his micro-cuvèe Haut-Condissas 2003, in ‘BiB’. There is also Rolland de By, La Clare, la Fleur de By, all, what.

At the beginning, I was like you, let’s say… surprised. And then, in fact, when you think about it, why not? The wine is delicious, very Mèdoc, very modern, very new oak, very concentrated. Ideal for the bachelor wine enthusiast, who, in one purchase and without trashing their gleaming loft with unattractive cartons, solves their wine provisioning problem without resolving their solitude. 10cl of very good wine at each meal, 5 euros the glass, no more oxidised fag-ends in the bottle and problems of waste sorting. A permanently clean fridge, a wine at a good temperature for the TV dinner, everything to please the ‘mono-mènage’ (50% of Paris homes, unless I’m mistaken…).

Will other prestigious wines follow? Will we see a Chambertin in ‘BiB’? Who will live, will see…
