Martin Luther King Day
Posted on | January 16, 2006
The eloquence of Martin Luther King, his ideals and his vision inspired millions.
I thought I would use this blog to remember him and provide further inspiration through the voice of another figure whom I admire - Graca Michel. Graca Michel, the wife of Nelson Mandela is a social scientist and here she is talking about the impact of AIDS on society to an audience in South Africa a few years ago (first heard on the Africa Learning Channel). A spectre which had not yet descended on the world during the life of Martin Luther King.
75% of the 40 million people suffering from AIDS in the world live in Africa (and these are old figures). Social workers and health providers say these figures have a numbing effect and people can’t take them in - their vastness makes them virtually meaningless.
Some of you may find this distressing. Let’s hope so.
Happy Holidays…
